Regular spinning hard drives inherently have 2 deficiencies when it comes to information retrieval. The first is the “seek time” that it takes for the drive’s read/write heads to locate the data on the disk. The second is the rotational speed of the of the disk spinning.

We timed the average data retrieval speed latency of our SSD VPS servers versus a VPS with hard disk drives while under high load. You can see for yourself, mechanical hard disk drives take about 18-22 (about 2000%) times longer to access database records during periods of heavy database requests.
