Importing mail and contacts from another email account into Gmail is easy using Gmail’s built-in Mail Fetcher and Google Contacts tools. Here’s a step-by-step guide for both.
How to Import Mail and Contacts into Gmail
✅ This is ideal when moving from services like Yahoo, Outlook, Hotmail, or another Gmail account.
🔹 Step 1: Open Gmail Settings
-
Go to https://mail.google.com and sign in.
-
Click the âš™ï¸ gear icon in the top-right.
-
Select “See all settingsâ€.
-
Go to the Accounts and Import tab.
Â
🔹 Step 2: Import Mail and Contacts
-
In the Accounts and Import tab, find:
-
“Import mail and contacts†under the Import mail and contacts section.
-
-
Click on it. A pop-up will appear prompting you to enter the email address of the account you want to import from.
Â
🔹 Step 3: Sign in to the Old Email Account
-
Enter the email address (e.g.,
you@oldmail.com) and click Continue. -
You’ll be redirected to sign in to the old account and grant access to Gmail (OAuth permission).
-
For older services (like Yahoo or non-Google IMAP), you may need to provide:
-
Email address
-
Password (or app-specific password)
-
Incoming mail server (e.g.,
imap.mail.yahoo.com) -
Port number
-
-
Â
🔹 Step 4: Choose What to Import
You’ll be given options to:

✅ Import mail
-
✅ Import new mail for the next 30 days (optional)
Check the boxes for what you want, then click Start Import.
Â
🔹 Step 5: Wait for the Import to Finish
-
Gmail will begin copying your mail and contacts in the background.
-
The process can take a few hours to a few days depending on volume.
-
You can close Gmail and come back later—it runs in the background.
Imported emails appear in your inbox or under a label with the old account’s name.
