Upload files with SFTP (FileZilla)

Guide from cPanel & websites — written for Canadian customers. Billing always in CAD.

cPanel & websites

Use SFTP to upload site files securely. Plain FTP is obsolete on modern networks.

Get credentials

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open FTP Accounts (or use your main cPanel username — it also works for SFTP on most of our servers).
  3. Note the host (domain or server hostname), username, password, and port 22 for SFTP.

FileZilla steps

  1. Download FileZilla Client from the official site.
  2. File → Site Manager → New Site.
  3. Protocol: SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol.
  4. Host: your server hostname. Port: 22.
  5. Logon type: Normal. User and password from cPanel.
  6. Connect. Remote path for the main site is usually /home/USERNAME/public_html/.

SSH note

SSH shell access depends on your plan and whether we have enabled it for the account. SFTP file transfer is enough for most website updates. If you need SSH keys or shell, open a ticket.

Security

  • Prefer SFTP over FTP.
  • Do not share FTP passwords in email.
  • Remove unused FTP accounts.
