Located in the south-western part of Quebec, on the banks of Yamaska River, Saint-Hyacinthe has a population of 55,823, as per the 2006 census. In a period of five years, from 2001 to 2006, the population grew by 2.9%. Approximately 96.57% of the residents speak only French, 0.54% of the population is English speaking. On 1st January 2002, the city was merged with the six neighboring towns namely, Saint-Hyacinthe, Saint-Rosalie, Saint-Rosalie Parish, Saint-Thomas-d.Aquin, Saint-Hyacinthe-le-Confesseur, and Notre-Dame-de-Sanit-Hyacinthe. In 1849, the village of Sanit-Hyacinthe was established. In 1850, the village became a town and in 1857, the town transformed into a city. Named after Sanit Hyacinth, the city houses the headquarters of Casavant Freres Pipe Organ Builders.
