Situated on the southeastern coast of Lac-Saint-Jean, Alma is the capital of the Municipality of Lac-Saint-Jean-Est Regional County. The city came into being in 1962 after the amalgamation of four villages viz. Naudville, St-Joseph d.Alma, Isle-Maligne and Riverbend. In the year 2002, the town was merged with Delisle City of Quebec. Between the 1920s and 1930s, the area was an important industrial center of Canada, basically due to the presence of hydro-electrical dam on the river Grande-Decharge, Alcan, an aluminum smelting plant, and a paper mill. All these three milestones are still functional. As per the 2006 census, the total population of the city is 29,998, and all the inhabitants live in an area of 195.59km2.
